This small-group activity introduces you to one of Lapland’s most traditional winter pastimes. Guided by Timo Tapaninen, who grew up in Lapland and has spent a lifetime fishing on frozen waters, you’ll learn how locals really fish in Arctic conditions.
Your adventure begins with a pick-up from your accommodation in Rovaniemi. From there we drive to the best ice fishing location of the day, chosen based on weather, ice conditions and fishing opportunities.
In mid-winter we often fish on frozen lakes or rivers close to the city. During early winter and spring we may travel slightly further to ensure the safest and strongest ice conditions.
With a maximum group size of just 6 guests, the experience remains relaxed and personal. Small groups allow plenty of individual guidance and create a calm atmosphere in the quiet Arctic wilderness.
Before fishing begins, you will learn the essentials of local ice fishing:
• how to drill your own hole in the ice
• how to use an ice fishing rod
• simple techniques locals use to attract fish
• which fish species live in these waters
• how to move safely on frozen lakes and rivers
Once everything is ready, we begin fishing together on the ice. With personal guidance throughout the experience, you’ll learn real techniques used by local fishermen and maximise your chances of catching fish.
Ice fishing is also about slowing down and enjoying the Arctic environment — the silence, winter light and vast snowy landscapes of Lapland.
During the trip we prepare a traditional campfire meal at a Finnish wilderness shelter (laavu) located near the fishing area. You’ll enjoy warm drinks and Lapland-style campfire food cooked over an open fire while relaxing in peaceful Arctic nature.
Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available upon request.
Throughout the experience, professional photos are taken of you and the surrounding Arctic scenery. All edited photos are delivered afterwards via a personal download link within 24 hours after the tour.
Whether this is your first time ice fishing or you already enjoy outdoor winter activities, this tour offers a genuine and peaceful connection to Lapland’s winter nature.
