Had enough of the city? The Ram Gorge is one of Hungary's most spectacular natural spots – and one of the least known. Most visitors to Budapest never make it here, which is exactly what makes it special.
We pick you up at your hotel and drive about an hour north into the Visegrád Hills, a volcanic mountain range packed with dramatic rock formations, rare wildlife and ancient forest. Keep your eyes open on the trail – black woodpeckers, wildcats and plenty of other animals call this place home.
The hike itself winds through shaded beech and oak woodland before dropping into the gorge itself. This is where it gets interesting. Ladders bolted into the rock, stream crossings, 20-30 metre volcanic walls rising on either side of you – it's genuinely adventurous without requiring any technical skills. Good balance and a bit of energy is all you need. There's even a natural spring along the way, so you can travel light and fill up your bottle on the trail.
The full route is 8 km with around 300 metres of elevation gain. Two steeper sections, but nothing that'll stop you if you're in reasonable shape. Plan for about 3 hours on the trail.
