What you can expect

Set foot in Italy and soak up the lively atmosphere of an open-air street market. Visit the picturesque Italian town of Ventimiglia on Friday, or seaside San Remo on Thursday or Saturday. Then fall in love with the Mediterranean beauty of Menton, one of France’s most charming towns.

Cross the border to experience a vibrant Italian town on market day. The markets in both Ventimiglia and San Remo are a gourmet paradise. Stroll among stands stacked high with authentic Italian delicacies, seasonal fruits and fresh vegetables. Admire the wares at fresh pasta stalls and patisserie counters, and peek into delicatessens selling authentic Italian foods like fragrant black truffles, tapenades, sundried tomatoes, salamis and parmigiano. Check out the colourful array of plants and flowers, as well as stalls selling clothes, shoes and accessories. Walk to the heart of the medieval old town and delve into small alleyways and quaint squares lined with old stone houses.

Close to the Italian border, exactly halfway between Paris and Rome, the dazzling city of Menton – known as the “Pearl of France” – is known for the sweet and delicious lemons that grow on its sun-soaked hillsides. See the magnificent Basilica of Saint-Michel, the old port with its impressive bastion built to defend the city in 1636 and the tumble of pastel buildings and old lanes winding down toward the beach.
