BURN OFF STEAM AT POINT PLEASANT PARK
To begin, we'll leave the cruise dock and drive to Point Pleasant Park for a stroll. Here your children will be able to walk, run, jump and skip along the harbour-view road that leads to the Battle of the Atlantic Memorial at the very tip of the park. The park is a great place to let your kids burn off some of that youthful energy and get some fresh air! Be sure to bring peanuts for the squirrels!
SMELL THE FLOWERS AT THE PUBLIC GARDENS
Our next stop will be the Public Gardens. It is a 22 acre formal Victorian garden with a bandstand, large pond with ducks, play area, and ice cream shop that offers hand-paddled ice cream (and bathrooms - always important when travelling with children!). We typically spend approximately thirty minutes in the gardens.
THE CITADEL FORTRESS: A STEP BACK IN TIME
We'll take a step back in time and visit the Citadel Fortress (the reason for Halifax) where we'll learn all about this 1850's fortress. We can walk the walls, go down in the 'ditch', and experience the firing of the noon gun, a daily event since 1750. We may even get to see a pipe and drum band rehearsal! There are bathrooms and a gift shop on site.
VISIT THE MARITIME MUSEUM OF THE ATLANTIC
For our next activity, we'll spend some time in and around the harbour near the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. There's always activity in the harbour running the gamut from cargo, container and warships, to tugboats, sailing boats and ferries moving about the busy harbour. Located next to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is an exciting playground shaped like a submarine! You'll have time to enjoy a snack and bathroom stop before our next activity.
ALONG HALIFAX HARBOUR
After the museum, we'll drive along the shoreline of Halifax Harbour, which is the second largest natural harbour in the world. We'll pass by numerous historical sites, Canada's largest navy base, a large ship yard, and pass under two bridges where we'll pause to hear the story of one of the greatest man-made disasters of all time; the Halifax Explosion of 1917. Then we're off to Seaview Park which is located on the inner harbour known as Bedford Basin. This is where the convoys of WWI &WWII began their journey across the Atlantic to Europe. Seaview Park has a great playground for the kids to enjoy.
THE PLACE WHERE TIME BEGAN
Perhaps we'll stop for coffee and a bathroom break before heading out for visi
