What you can expect

Balik Pulau is Penang's true durian heartland – a quiet countryside of rolling hills, old orchards, and kampung charm. This guided durian tasting and farm tour takes you deep into a family-owned sustainable orchard, far from tourist crowds. You won't just eat durians. You'll walk among the trees, meet the farmers, and experience the land that produces Malaysia's most prized varieties.

Your journey begins at the orchard entrance. Your guide – a farmer or local expert – leads you along shaded paths beneath towering durian trees, some over 40 years old. You'll see Musang King trees with their distinctive broad leaves, Black Thorn trees bearing dark-spiky fruits, and other heritage varieties like D24, Hor Lor, and Red Prawn.

Sustainable farming first-hand – The orchard thrives without chemical pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. Fallen leaves and fruits become natural compost. Bats and birds control pests naturally. Farmers wait for durians to drop at night – peak ripeness – rather than cutting or artificially ripening them. You'll learn why Balik Pulau's soil and climate create such unique flavours.

The tasting pavilion – After the walk, settle into a rustic open-sided pavilion. Your guide opens each durian in front of you – the sharp crack of the spiky shell revealing golden, custard-like flesh. Musang King arrives first – buttery, thick, slightly bitter with a long finish. Black Thorn follows – dark orange flesh, creamy-yet-dry texture, complex sweet-bitter notes. Other local varieties may include D15 or “Lin Feng Jiao”.

Between durian servings – cleanse your palate with seasonal tropical fruits. All harvested fresh from the farm or neighbouring orchards.

Refreshing coconut drink – A young green coconut is sliced open right in front of you. Drink the naturally sweet, electrolyte-rich coconut water straight from the shell.

What makes this unique – You're not sitting in a city shop eating frozen durians. You're on the farm where they fell. You learn why sustainable farming matters. You taste fresh varieties most visitors never try.

Practical tips – Wear comfortable walking shoes. Insect repellent recommended. Tour runs May–August (peak season). Come hungry.

Included – Guided orchard tour, sustainable farming talk, tasting of Musang King, Black Thorn + local varieties, seasonal fruits, one coconut drink.

All durian varieties will be based on the timing of the seasons.

Book your spot – small group sizes ensure personal attention. This is Balik Pulau durian, straight from the source.

Note: Musang King and Black Thorn will bee subject to availability to their season.
