There is a border on Pantelleria that belongs to neither land nor sea: it is the thin line where the two worlds have met and clashed for millennia. This is where Il Lago Nascosto (The Hidden Lake) comes to life, a hike of approximately 5 kilometres (3 miles) through the island's coastal ecosystem, one of the richest and most remarkable in the entire Pantelleria Island National Park.
You walk across a geologically young landscape, born of fire and shaped by wind and water, yet capable of supporting nearly all of the island's plant species. Every step tells a storey of extraordinary biodiversity: aromatic shrubs, wildflowers, and Mediterranean scrub that infuses an ever-changing landscape with fragrance and colour.
The route passes through places of rare beauty. Cala Cinque Denti welcomes hikers with its jagged landscape, featuring rocks carved by time into shapes that almost seem deliberately designed. Next comes Laghetto Senzanome, a small sea basin nestled among the rocks, where you can stop for a swim in water that tastes of the wild and of salt – one of those places you won't easily forget. The trail continues towards Punta Spadillo, where the large lighthouse stands alone, a silent witness to the presence of humankind on this border island.
Accompanied by an experienced guide, you will immerse yourself in a changing landscape that speaks to those who know how to listen: to the curious botanist, to the nature photographer, to those who are simply seeking the pleasure of walking with their gaze freely fixed on the horizon.
