Your private guide and experienced local polers will take you deep into channels that big boats can never reach. The word mokoro comes from the Setswana language. Traditionally, these canoes were carved from a single Kalahari sausage tree, but today most are made from fibreglass to protect the trees while keeping the same graceful, shallow shape. They sit just inches above the water, with space for two guests and a standing poler at the back.
Unlike motorboats, mokoros have no engine, no fuel smell, and no noise. Your poler uses a long wooden pole to push you through channels, reeds, and papyrus beds. It is completely human-powered, and that silence is everything. It lets you drift within metres of wildlife without disturbing them. Because you are low in the water and silent, animals act naturally around.
The Okavango is also one of the best birding destinations on earth, with over 400 species. From the mokoro, photograph the rare Pel’s fishing owl, the vibrant African jacana walking on lily leaves, the giant kingfisher, and the iconic saddle-billed stork. Your guides know the calls and will point out species you would miss from a vehicle.
Glide past floating islands of vegetation, through narrow tunnels of reeds, and into open lagoons that mirror the sky. In the dry season from June to October, the water is concentrated in channels, which is perfect for mokoro. In flood season from November to May, the Delta expands into a vast inland sea.

Your poler will be from a local Okavango community with generations of knowledge, and your guide leads the trip to ensure seamless. Groups are small with a maximum of two guests per mokoro for privacy, photography, and silence. Comfort and safety are a priority, so cushions, waterproof dry bags, life jackets, and sun protection are provided. All polers are trained in wildlife safety and first aid.
Choose a mid-morning excursion with a gourmet bush breakfast on an island, or a late-afternoon trip ending with a sundowner drink as the Delta turns gold. The best time to go depends on what you want to experience. From May to August is peak flood season with deep water, lush green channels, newborn wildlife, and cooler weather that is ideal for photography. September to October sees the water recede and wildlife concentrate, making it excellent for game viewing combined with mokoro. November to April is the green season with, dramatic skies, migratory birds, and lower rates, though some channels may be too shallow.
