What you can expect
There is a city in Sardinia where you can stand in a Roman theatre and look out over the same sea that Phoenician sailors once navigated, where the stones beneath your feet have known three thousand years of footsteps, and where the boundary between the past and the present dissolves almost without your noticing. This is Nora.
This tour invites you to discover one of Sardinia's most extraordinary archaeological sites in the company of fellow travellers who share your passion for history, beauty and the stories that ancient places hold. Your expert English-speaking guide will accompany you from Cagliari southwards along the coast, beginning the journey long before you reach Nora itself.
Leaving central Cagliari, your route follows the edge of the Santa Gilla Lagoon — a vast protected wetland on the outskirts of the city, and one of the western Mediterranean's most important habitats for migratory birds. Here, flocks of wild pink flamingos gather in the shallow waters throughout the year, their extraordinary colour a startling contrast against the silver of the lagoon and the distant hills. Your guide will share insights into the ecology of this extraordinary environment as the saltpans and reeds give way to the open countryside.
As you travel south, your guide will introduce the geological and human history of the landscape — the ancient forces that shaped this coastline, the successive waves of civilisation drawn to its sheltered bays and fertile plains, and the storey of the small peninsula where Nora was founded so many centuries ago.
Before entering the archaeological site, your route passes the small church of Sant'Efisio — an 11th-century chapel of profound beauty, dedicated to the Roman soldier-martyr who became Sardinia's most beloved saint. Your guide will recount the storey of Efisio — his conversion, his martyrdom on this very shore, and the extraordinary procession held in his honour in Cagliari every year on the first of May, one of the most spectacular and deeply felt religious celebrations in Sardinia.
Then, Nora itself. Founded by the Phoenicians, developed by the Carthaginians and finally transformed by the Romans into one of their most prosperous provincial cities, Nora was inhabited continuously for over a thousand years before the sea gradually reclaimed its lower quarters. What remains is extraordinary — a Roman theatre still overlooking the sea, thermal baths with intact mosaic floors, temples, streets and houses — all set against a backdrop of turquoise water and golden sand that makes this one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in Sardinia.
