What you can expect

  • The workshop begins with a brief introduction into the history and concept of Japanese Painting (Nihonga). You will also get a crash course on Japanese mineral pigments (Iwa enogu), Painting tools (brush and scroll), and painting techniques.
    You will choose an artwork to paint, and the master will give you step-by-step instructions on how to paint.
    It is no problem if you are a beginner, the master has extensive experience with teaching students, including beginners, how to paint Japanese Painting.

    When painting, you will use authentic mineral pigments favoured by professionals. If you like, you can also add a gold leaf decoration technique to your artwork at no extra charge.

    You can also enjoy authentic matcha green tea alongside Japanese-style sweets.

    Note: If you have any food allergies, dietary restrictions, or religious/cultural dietary requirements, please let us know in advance. We will do our best to provide suitable alternatives. We also offer caffeine-free options like Barley tea upon request.

    At the end of the workshop, you will receive a free tote bag and a hanging scroll box !

    The workshop will be hosted at a small art gallery in Ginza, Tokyo. It is owned and operated by a master Akutsu-sensei, who will also be your instructor.
    Akutsu-sensei is a graduate of Tama Art University and a PhD from Tsukuba University's art department. After graduation, he has built an international career as an artist and designer. He also has experience teaching at an art school, and at his art class.

    Tokyo Art Place Gallery opened in 2025 to share art with everyone. He believes that art is for the people, not just for industry professionals.
