I moved to Nicosia over 10 years ago and, over time, discovered a cycling route that I truly love. Exploring the city by bike became my way of understanding its different sides — its contrasts, its history, and the small details that make it special.
This tour takes you through the very heart of the city, offering a unique journey across cultures, communities, and time.
We begin on the Greek Cypriot side, riding through the Agioi Omologites neighbourhood, the Linear Park and the Nicosia Municipal Gardens. Along the way, we pass key landmarks including the Municipal Theatre, the Parliament, and the Venetian City Walls, before entering the old town through Paphos Gate and passing the Holy Cross Catholic Church.
As we approach the UN Buffer Zone (or Green Line), you’ll experience a completely different side of Nicosia. We pass through the iconic Ledra Palace Checkpoint, Ledra Palace Hotel, and the Home for Cooperation — a powerful glimpse into the city’s recent history.
Crossing into the Turkish Cypriot side, the atmosphere shifts again. We ride through Zahra Street, a lively pedestrian area with cafés and local life, and explore historic quarters including the old Armenian neighbourhoods and the Armenian Church of Our Lady of Tyre. We continue to Büyük Han and Kumarcılar Han, beautifully restored caravanserais full of character, and visit Selimiye Camii — a striking mosque set within a former Gothic cathedral.
Returning via Ledras Street checkpoint, we re-enter the Greek Cypriot side and continue through important cultural and historical sites such as Faneromeni Church, the Old Gymnasium, the Archbishop’s Palace, and the picturesque Chrysaliniotissa neighbourhood.
Throughout the ride, we cycle through charming old streets, hidden corners, peaceful parks, main squares, and modern parts of the city. We pass by local cafés and taverns, with views across the Green Line that few visitors get to experience.
Over the years, I’ve shared this route with friends, creating unforgettable memories along the way.
This isn’t just a bike tour — it’s a personal journey through the culture, history, and everyday life of Nicosia.
