Tōdai-ji is best known for housing the Great Buddha, called “Daibutsu,” which is a विशाल bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha. The main hall, known as the Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden), is one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. The temple was established by Emperor Shōmu as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples in Japan, playing an important role in spreading Buddhism across the country.
