What you can expect

  • Maasai Mara is Kenya’s crown jewel and Africa’s greatest wildlife theatre. Stretching over 1,510 sq km in the southwestern corner of Kenya, bordering Tanzania’s Serengeti, it is where raw nature is at its most dramatic.

    The Landscape:
Picture endless golden savannah dotted with flat-topped acacia trees, rolling hills, and the winding Mara and Talek Rivers lined with thick riverine forests. The reserve sits at 1,500-2,100m above sea level. During the rains it turns emerald green, during the dry season it glows gold – always breathtaking, always wild.
Wildlife – Why It’s World Famous:
This is the land of the Big Five – Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo, and Rhino – all present in healthy numbers. But Mara is more than that. It holds one of the highest densities of lions on Earth, elusive leopards lounging in croton trees, and huge herds of elephants and buffaloes. It’s home to cheetahs hunting on open plains, hyenas, jackals, bat-eared foxes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, topis, impalas, hippos and crocodiles crowding the rivers. Over 470 bird species have been recorded.

The Great Migration – The 8th Wonder of the World:
From July to October, Mara becomes the stage for the Greatest Wildlife Show on Earth. Over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras and gazelles cross from the Serengeti in a desperate search for greener pastures. The most dramatic moment? The Mara River crossings – thousands of animals plunging into crocodile-infested waters in a fight for survival. It is chaotic, emotional, and unforgettable.

    The Maasai Culture:
The reserve is named after the Maasai people, the semi-nomadic pastoralists who have co-existed with wildlife for centuries. A visit is incomplete without a cultural visit to a Manyatta (village) – to witness their red shukas, jumping dance, beadwork, and deep respect for cattle and nature.
