Legend has it that a group of backpackers threw a birthday party for their friend on the night of the full moon on the crescent-shaped beach of Hat Rin. They had such a good time that they came back the following year to do it again, and again, and again. Word got out and more people started coming from all over the world to join in.

The giant festival-like party features a lot of drinking, dancing, and fun. Each bar has its own sound system, while the beach is lined with people selling alcohol, fire dancers, and booths selling glow-in-the-dark face paint. While the crowd is mostly made up of young travellers, families and those old enough to be grandparents are not out of place! All Full Moon Party goers must pay an entrance fee of THB 100 per person upon arrival at Hat Rin Beach.
