Begin your morning with pickup from your hotel, villa, or apartment and enjoy a scenic drive through the green highlands of Chamarel, one of the most peaceful and picturesque regions of Mauritius. Here, forested mountains and cool air welcome you to a place where the island’s storey began.
Your adventure starts in the Native Forest of Chamarel, a beautifully restored nature reserve that protects Mauritius’ ancient trees and rare wildlife. Visit the small museum to learn how the island looked before human arrival and discover the conservation work helping to revive its native ecosystem.
Before your walk, meet the gentle Aldabra giant tortoises that play an important role in restoring the forest by grazing and dispersing seeds. Then follow your guide along the raised wooden walkway for a thirty minute guided tour through one of the best preserved ebony forests in Mauritius. Surrounded by giant ferns and ebony trees, you will learn about the forest’s history and restoration efforts while spotting fruit bats, bright green geckos, and the rare paradise flycatcher.
After the guided section, continue exploring at your own pace. The trails lead to Sublime Point, a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Le Morne Brabant, Ile aux Benitiers, and the turquoise lagoon below. You may see white tailed tropic birds gliding through the valley or fruit bats flying overhead. Enjoy a break at the small snack area near Sublime Point, where local treats and drinks are available.
For the more active, a short hike to Piton Canot rewards you with a 360 degree view of the southwest coast and Black River Gorges. The forest visit usually takes between one and two hours, or longer for those who choose to hike to Piton Canot.
After your forest walk, continue towards the coast for an optional lunch stop at a local restaurant. This break allows you to relax and enjoy a meal of your choice at your own expense, or you may choose to skip lunch and proceed directly to the next stop.
In the afternoon, head to Le Morne Beach, one of the island’s most iconic and beautiful locations. Relax on the soft white sand, swim in the clear lagoon, or simply admire the dramatic backdrop of Le Morne Brabant, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As the day comes to a close, enjoy a comfortable drive back to your accommodation. This journey combines forest discovery, flexible dining, and the serenity of the sea, offering a complete experience of Mauritius’ natural beauty.
