Activity itinerary

Praca da Independencia

  • 2h
Maputo’s heart is the Praça da Independência, or Independence Square, sitting amid a surprising blend of architectural styles and straddling the city’s uptown and its historic city centre area called Baixa. Renamed in 1975 after Mozambique won its independence from the Portuguese, the square is dominated by a large statue of the country’s first president, Samora Machel, who died in a mysterious plane crash. On the north side of the square, look for the neoclassical city hall. To its east, the Art Deco Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, which resembles a wedding cake and was consecrated in 1944, is impossible to miss. Nearby, the French-Mozambican Cultural Centre hosts everything from jazz performances to art exhibitions, and the Tunduru Botanical GardensCathedral, Town hall, samora Machel Status, French-Mozambique cultural centre, Iron house, Tunduru Botanical Gardenlandmark featuring a 61-meter bell tower

Mercado Central de Maputo

  • 30m
the Maputo Central Market—a covered market built in 1901 inside a Portuguese colonial building. It can get hot and crowded inside, but it’s well worth a little bit of sweat to witness the near-constant buzz of activity from early morning to afternoon as vendors hawk everything from tropical fruits and vegetables to seafood, nuts (don’t miss the cashews), handmade batiks, wood carvings and other souvenirs.

Maputo Central Train Station

  • 30m
Maputo's Central Railway Station in Mozambique stands as a grand monument of transport, a striking edifice that emerged from the architectural vision of Alfredo Augusto Lisboa de Lima, Mário Veiga, and Ferreira da Costa. Its construction spanned from 1913 to 1916[1], during a period of fervent growth and change. Despite common misconceptions, the majestic design is not the work of Gustave Eiffel, though the station's architecture does evoke the industrial grandeur associated with Eiffel's iconic creations.

Fortaleza of Maputo

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket included
Maputo Fortaleza It has a square floor plan, built in reddish stone masonry. It has only one access gate that opens onto a central courtyard, also with a square layout, to which, in turn, the various rooms that make up the building open. In this courtyard currently stands the equestrian statue of Mouzinho de Albuquerque, which, before the Independence of Mozambique, stood in front of the Municipality of Lourenço Marques.

FEIMA - Feira de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomica

  • 1h
FIEMA art market Nestled among the trees and the city's sounds, FEIMA (the Fair of Handicrafts, Flowers, and Gastronomy) stands out as a vibrant haven of culture, art, and flavours in the heart of Maputo. For those seeking a deep dive into Mozambican essence, this is the place where tradition and modernity merge, creating a setting filled with colours, textures, and aromas that captivate both locals and tourists.
