Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is a very popular sport here in Costa Rica. Over 22 kilometres of world-class, single-track trails with shifting views of the coast make Las Catalinas a destination for mountain biking enthusiasts from around the globe. Deep in the shade of our quiet valleys, like a scene straight out of the film Jurassic Park, you can marvel at the flora and fauna around you. Likely wildlife sightings include monkeys, coatis (relatives of the raccoon), deer, peccaries (wild hogs), and a variety of exotic birds. Our trails are sustainably built with a moderate grade, making for fantastic “flow” riding with enjoyable swoops and roller coasters but no sustained, grunting climbs. Pura Vida Ride, our local partner, provides bikes, guidance, tours, and repairs.
Hiking & Trail Running
Las Catalinas is a paradise for hikers and trail runners, with a gamut of exciting tracks that provide unforgettable moments and breathtaking views. Apart from mountain biking trails, there are five trails designated for hiking. These paths traverse the waterfront and head up to some of the highest points in Las Catalinas, with numerous lookouts and the chance to encounter birds and other wildlife.
Snorkelling
Some of the finest snorkelling in Costa Rica can be found right here in Las Catalinas. The best spots are wherever you see rocks: the far side of Playa Dantita, the reef in between Danta and Dantita, along the shore of Punta Penca, and at the Islotes Pitahayas (small islands) just offshore. You’ll find lots of reef fish, big spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, coral, and interesting underwater topography.
Surfing
Surfing is a very popular activity in Guanacaste. The area features a wide variety of surf breaks, for different skill levels. Our concierge team would love to help you organise outings to Playa Grande, Witch’s Rock, and other famous nearby breaks.
Sea Kayaking & Stand-up Paddle-Boarding
Offering glassy, smooth conditions, the protected bay of Playa Danta is perfect for sea kayaking and stand-up paddle-boarding. The Islotes Pitahayas (small islands), just 1 kilometre offshore, are an ideal destination, with the swell surging dramatically on the rocks. The islands are a famous nesting site for pelicans and frigate birds. The coastline in both directions is dramatic, with a variety of beautiful beaches, cliffs, and great snorkelling and swimming, all within paddling range.
