Discover the beauty and spirit of Dunhuang murals through a hands-on painting experience inspired by the world-famous Mogao Caves. Renowned for their vivid colours and expressive styles, Dunhuang murals not only showcase artistic brilliance but also reflect the cultural prosperity, economy, and beliefs of different historical periods.

At the beginning of the experience, your instructor will introduce the basic history of Dunhuang murals, explaining how painting styles, colour palettes, and themes evolved across different dynasties. From elegant lines of the Wei and Jin periods to the rich colours of the Tang dynasty, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how art mirrored its time.

This experience is designed to be beginner-friendly. Even with no prior painting experience, you can choose your favourite design from over a hundred traditional mural patterns. Under one-on-one guidance from a professional teacher, you will complete your artwork within about three hours.

To recreate the authentic feel of Dunhuang murals, the painting is done on a clay board made from local Dunhuang earth, similar to the original mural base. You will use natural mineral pigments, the same type traditionally used in mural painting, to add colour and depth to your work. These pigments produce soft yet vibrant tones that closely resemble those found in ancient caves.

By the end of the session, you will have your own finished mural artwork to take home—a meaningful cultural souvenir and a personal connection to Dunhuang’s artistic legacy.
