Day 1: Lanzhou to Tianshui
Begin your journey in Lanzhou and travel to the Maijishan Grottoes, one of China’s four major grottoes. Marvel at the stunning cliffside sculptures and intricate mud art, earning it the title of the “Oriental Sculpture Gallery.” In the evening, explore Tianshui’s ancient city and savour local delicacies like Jiangshui noodles and Guagua.
Day 2: Tianshui to Dangchang
After breakfast, head to the Guan’e Valley Scenic Area, often referred to as the “Little Jiuzhaigou.” This picturesque spot combines forests, grasslands, canyons, waterfalls, alpine lakes, and Tibetan villages, offering breathtaking views.
Day 3: Dangchang to Zhagana
Travel along winding mountain roads, stopping at the Lazikou Battle Monument. Continue through the Diebu forests, gradually entering the Tibetan region. Arrive in Zhagana, a natural stone city composed of four villages and a stone mountain. Experience authentic Tibetan culture with a visit to a local family, where you can taste barley wine, make zanba, and enjoy traditional dances.
Day 4: Zhagana to Tangke
If the weather is clear, wake up early to witness the stunning morning mist and golden mountain views in Zhagana. After breakfast, drive to the vast Ruoergai Grassland and visit the Flower Lake Ecotourism Area. In the afternoon, head to the First Bend of the Yellow River, where you can admire the river’s graceful curves and wait for a spectacular sunset.
Day 5: Tangke to Xiahe
After breakfast, travel to Langmusi, known as the “Little Switzerland of the East.” This town straddles the Gansu and Sichuan provinces and is famous for its two Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Geerdi Monastery (Sichuan) and Saichi Monastery (Gansu). In the afternoon, drive to Xiahe, passing through the scenic Sangke Grassland, where you can stop to ride horses and take photos.
Day 6: Xiahe to Lanzhou
Visit Labrang Monastery, one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism. Explore its long prayer corridor and learn about its rigorous academic system. Then, head to the Ganga Secret Land, featuring ancient cities, caves, canyons, and grasslands. Highlights include the Octagonal Ancient City and Baishi Cliff. Finally, return to Lanzhou, concluding your Gannan adventure.
