Begin your afternoon at the marina, where you'll board a comfortable, modern speedboat. With a small group cap, there's space to move around and settle in without jostling for a view. A professional, English-speaking crew is on hand throughout, briefing you on the route and keeping the whole afternoon feeling relaxed rather than rushed.

As the speedboat pulls away from Labuan Bajo, the town's hillside skyline gives way to open water and a scattering of small islands on the horizon. Enjoy the sea spray, warm air, and uninterrupted views as the light softens into late-afternoon gold. This is a calm, low-effort way to spend the evening: no long hikes, just a smooth cruise towards one of the region's best sunset viewpoints.

For travellers who want a little more in the water, there's an optional stop for snorkelling en route at an additional charge. Life jackets and snorkel gear are available on board for anyone who'd like to swim among the coral and reef fish in the calm, clear water. If you'd rather stay dry and save your energy for the sunset show, that's fine too. This flexibility makes the tour work equally well for snorkellers, non-swimmers, and anyone travelling with kids or older family members.

As you approach Kalong Island — also known locally as Flying Fox Island — the crew will position the boat for the best vantage point, away from the more crowded charter routes. As the sun drops towards the horizon and the sky shifts from gold to deep orange, the island's mangrove canopy begins to stir. Within minutes, the first flying foxes take to the air — and within the hour, tens of thousands of giant fruit bats are pouring out of the trees in a continuous wave, silhouetted against the fading light.

While you watch, the crew keeps you comfortable: cold water and soft drinks are served on board throughout the tour, and life jackets remain accessible at all times, whether you're snorkelling earlier in the tour or just prefer to have one on hand during the crossing. This is meant to feel like a relaxed evening out on the water, not an endurance trip.

Long before the bats appear, the sky over the bay puts on its own show — bands of gold, pink, and burnt orange reflecting off the water. Because the group size is kept small, you'll have room to move around the boat and find your own spot for photos, rather than being boxed in by a full charter of unfamiliar faces.

As darkness falls and the last of the bats disappear into the distance, the speedboat begins its return journey to Labuan Bajo — calmer and quieter, often under a sky full of stars, a fitting close to the afternoon before you're dropped back at the marina (or your hotel, depending on your selected package).
