What you can expect

Discover the enchanting “culture of light” at Akari Design Kobo, an authentic lighting studio in the heart of Kyoto. Unlike typical tourist facilities, our workshop is a professional studio where a master craftsman creates custom-made Washi paper lamps. To ensure clear and accurate communication, I use translation tools during the session. This allows me to share my professional techniques and the deep history of Washi with you effectively, ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for everyone. This 50-minute experience is designed to fit perfectly into your sightseeing schedule, offering a deep dive into Japanese tradition.
The Experience Flow:

  1. Expert Introduction & Handout: You will be welcomed by our professional craftsmen and staff. We will provide you with a specially prepared handout summarising the history of “Washi,” a traditional Japanese hand-crafted paper designated as a cultural heritage. Learn how Washi has beautifully illuminated Japanese lives for centuries.
  2. The Art of Hand-Tearing (Chigiri): Apply ultra-thin, hand-crafted Washi paper onto a glass candle holder. In Japan, the technique of tearing paper by hand is a traditional art form known as “Chigiri-e.” By tearing the paper rather than cutting it, you highlight the long, beautiful fibres of the Washi, creating a rich, organic texture that is truly one-of-a-kind.
  3. Artistic Customization: Personalise your design using a wide variety of die-cut patterns. From traditional motifs to playful shapes, this creative process is a favourite for guests of all ages, especially children, allowing everyone to express their personal style.
  4. Finishing & Photography: Once your design is complete, we will dry and set the paper to ensure durability. Light up your creation and enjoy a mini-photoshoot! The soft, warm glow of your handcrafted Washi lamp is guaranteed to look stunning on social media.
  5. Secure Packaging for Your Journey: The light source is a tea-light candle, so you can enjoy your lamp anywhere in the world without worrying about voltage or plug differences. We will professionally wrap your masterpiece in protective cushioning to ensure it stays safe in your suitcase for the trip home.
