Torii are gates built at the entrances to shrines, marking the boundary between the sacred space of the shrine (the sacred area) and the human world (the secular area). It is also said to serve as a symbol of the shrine and as a boundary to prevent evil spirits from entering the sacred space.

The 1,000 torii gates here at Fushimi Inari are the result of the accumulation of votive offerings made by worshippers in appreciation for their wishes that their wishes “come true” or “have come true.
Although the name “1,000 torii” is given to the gates, it is said that there are actually nearly 10,000 of them.
