What you can expect

  • Discover Kobe's blend of ancient roots, international heritage, and waterfront charm with an English-speaking local guide.

Begin at Ikuta Shrine, one of Japan's oldest religious sites, dating to 201 AD.

Known as the Shrine of Life for its resilience through wars and disasters, it is also celebrated as a powerful spot for en musubi (matchmaking and bonding).

Behind the main hall, the tranquil Ikuta Forest offers a peaceful contrast to the surrounding city.

Continue through the steep, winding streets of the Kitano Ijinkan District, home to foreign merchants and diplomats after the Port of Kobe opened in 1868.

Preserved Western-style mansions such as the Weathercock House and Uroko House sit alongside cafes and boutiques.

From there, stroll the mosaic-paved promenade of Kobe Harborland, the city's modern waterfront face, with views of the striking red Kobe Port Tower.

With a private vehicle, the day also climbs to the summit of Mt. Rokko, 931 metres above sea level.

From the Tenran Observatory, take in panoramic views over Kobe and Osaka Bay.

This highlight sits well outside city centre Kobe, so the public-transport itinerary instead stays close to central Kobe, completing an easier and more relaxed loop of the shrine, Kitano, and Harborland.

Either way, the itinerary can be adjusted within the tour's allotted time to suit your interests.
