What you can expect

Begin your day with a visit to Wat Samathi Pagoda, a serene Buddhist temple located on a hilltop approximately 6 kilometres from the Kep Crab Market. Officially recognised as the Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Centre of Kep Province, it serves as a major hub for meditation and spiritual retreats.

Situated at an elevation of approximately 800 metres, the pagoda offers expansive views of Kep Bay, the Gulf of Thailand, and surrounding national park jungles. Admire the main temple, which features a distinct yellow-gold roof and white walls. The interior is decorated with intricate murals depicting the life storey of Buddha.

Explore the grounds, which are filled with symbolic statues, including Naga serpents guarding the staircases, Garuda birds representing national protection, and various golden animals such as cows and cockerels.

Next, head to the Kep Crab Market (Psah Kdam), located about 1.6 kilometres west of the main beach. Watch “crab women” wade into the sea to retrieve bamboo traps filled with live blue swimmer crabs. While famous for blue crab, you can also find giant squid, prawns, stingrays, and various shellfish.

Purchase fresh crab (typically $7–$9 per kg after haggling) and pay vendors approximately $2 to have it stir-fried immediately with fresh Kampot pepper and garlic. Enjoy casual seating within the market for immediate consumption or head to a row of overwater restaurants next to the market for more formal dining with panoramic sea views. Popular spots include Magic Crab and The Crab Kitchen.

Finally, relax at Kep Beach, a kilometer-long crescent of sand that serves as the town's primary swimming area. The water is shallow and calm, making it safe for wading and families. Available rentals include parasols and chairs (approx. $5), life preservers, and hammocks.
