Full Description: Authentic Tonle Sap & Kampong Phluk Flooded Forest Experience
Embark on a captivating half-day journey to discover the heart of Cambodia’s Great Lake. Your adventure begins with a scenic drive through the outskirts of Siem Reap, passing through vibrant local villages and emerald-green rice fields. This journey offers a window into the daily lives of the Cambodian countryside before you arrive at the historic inlet of the Tonle Sap—the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
Upon arrival at the pier, you will board a private traditional wooden boat to visit Kampong Phluk, a stunning stilted village where houses tower up to 10 metres high. As you cruise slowly through the village canals, you will be thrilled by the authentic beauty of this unique community. Unlike typical tourist routes, Kampong Phluk offers a genuine look at a culture that lives in harmony with the rising and falling tides of the lake.
One of the true highlights of this trip is a short stop to board a small rowing boat. You will be paddled by a local guide through a dense, impressive flooded forest. Gliding beneath the shady canopy of submerged trees creates a breathtaking and romantic atmosphere, allowing you to connect deeply with nature's tranquility. While on board, you will have the opportunity to sample delicious local snacks, offering a taste of authentic lakeside flavours.
The journey continues downstream as your boat moves onto the vast, open water of the “Great Lake.” Here, you will witness a breathtaking view of the seemingly endless water surface and the submerged forests that define this ecosystem. Whether you choose the morning light or the golden afternoon sun, this excursion provides an unforgettable look at the “beating heart” of Cambodia.
Note: Between September and November, Kampong Phluk is typically fully flooded. During periods of very low water levels, an alternative visit to the floating village of Chong Kneas may be arranged to ensure you receive the best possible experience.
