The Lowdown This is a purposeful immersion into the Northern Isles, led by a local expert with a technical understanding of the landscape. From Neolithic villages older than the pyramids to Cold War naval relics, we bypass the standard sightseeing loop. This isn't a checklist; it is an intelligently paced journey shaped by archaeology and archival research. I avoid off-the-shelf itineraries and the congestion of rushed group stops.
This is a half-day experience with the flexibility to pivot based on your specific interests.
What Sets This Apart
• The Pace: Recalibrated in real-time to capture shifting light and avoid volume tourism crowds.
• The Transport: A dedicated MPV platform for individual space and comfort. Capacity is strictly limited to 4 adults (or 3 with extra space) to ensure the day remains unhurried.
• The Context: We avoid scripted lectures. We explore the Ring of Brodgar and Stenness as a single ritual landscape rather than isolated sites.
Typical Itinerary (Flexible)
• Italian Chapel & Churchill Barriers: An overview of how conflict physically reshaped Orkney’s geography.
• Scapa Flow Viewpoints: Perspective on the strategic naval anchorage that defined modern history.
• Unstan Chambered Tomb: An intimate Neolithic encounter away from the bus crowds.
• Yesnaby Cliffs: Elemental, Atlantic scale. Geology as a dictator of human life.
• Skara Brae (UNESCO): The best-preserved Neolithic village in Europe, older than the pyramids.
• The Ritual Heart: The Ring of Brodgar and Stones of Stenness.
The Logistics
• Pickup/Drop-off: Anywhere on the Orkney mainland (Northlink ferries from Stromness, Cruise Ports, Kirkwall Airport, or Local stays, anywhere on the Orkney mainland).
• Site Tickets: Entry to Skara Brae and the Italian Chapel is not included in the tour price but can be booked for you.
• Physical Intensity: Low.
• Food: We pause for a break to reset; lunch costs are personal.
A Note on communication: Platform messaging can be unreliable. If you want to see the full scope of my research and archival work, search Historic Orkney online.
