It wasn't only Pompeii that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on that fateful day in 79 AD. Herculaneum is famous as one of few ancient cities that can be seen in almost all its original splendour. Unlike Pompeii, it was buried deep enough to preserve the upper stories of buildings.

Life in ancient Rome is brought to light by the ruins of Herculaneum. The town was once one of the most prosperous in the Empire, and was home to fine houses and used marble much more lavishly than other towns in the area. Also, since it's located much closer to the volcano, the town suffered an impact from hotter ash, which has preserved wooden objects such as beds and furniture.
