Depending on the water level – the Port of Hamburg is a tidal harbour – the launches and ships sail to the most beautiful and interesting corners of the Port of Hamburg: UNESCO World Heritage Speicherstadt with its canals (depending on the tide), Hafencity, Elbphilharmonie concert hall, many well-known and unknown bridges, locks and container terminals, the large docks of Blohm + Voss, container ships, cargo ships and much more is waiting to be explored. On the grounds around the historic 50s sheds, you can learn all about an important period in the port’s history with the help of original tools and vehicles: the time of goods handling before the introduction of the container. In the former free port, on the last listed quay ensemble of the imperial era, huge cranes tower into the sky, historic goods wagons stand on the original rails of the harbour railway and a floating crane from 1917, a steam suction hopper from 1909, the general cargo freighter "MS Bleichen" and other historic watercraft lie in the harbour basin. The most impressive large-scale object among these weighty contemporary artefacts is the four-masted barque PEKING, which is over 100 years old. The display depot in the southern part of Shed 50A also houses around 10,000 objects on the subjects of harbour work, cargo handling, shipbuilding and shipping on around 2,500 square metres.
