Discover the cultural heritage of Guangzhou on a guided tour. Explore the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Shamian Island, and Yongqing Fang. The whole may take around 4 hours in total.
The guide will meet you at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, a UNESCO-listed architectural gem, to start your tour exploring Lingnan woodcarvings and live craftsmen. Built in the late 19th century, this former academic hall is renowned as a pinnacle of Lingnan architectural art. Be amazed by the exquisite “three carvings, two sculptures, and one cast”—the intricate stone, wood, and brick carvings, the vivid pottery and lime sculptures, and the colourful paintings that adorn the halls. The lifelike mythological statues on the roof ridges are particularly breathtaking. It’s not just a building; it's a treasure house of folk art. You will also be able to experience a short Chinese paper-cutting workshop here.
Next, immerse yourself in the charm of old Guangzhou at Yongqingfang. This revitalised area preserves the traditional Xiguan style with its cobblestone paths, arcaded buildings (Qilou), and ancient dwellings. Here, you can:
- Explore creative boutiques and quaint cafes nestled in historic buildings .
- Visit the Cantonese Opera Art Museum, a beautiful Lingnan-style garden museum showcasing elaborate costumes and historical exhibits. If timing allows, you might even catch a live performance.
- Step into the former residence of Bruce Lee, a typical Xiguan-style house that offers a glimpse into the early life of the legendary martial artist.
Your journey concludes on the picturesque Shamian Island. This small island on the Pearl River feels like a step into Europe, with over 150 buildings in various architectural styles, including Baroque and Neo-classical. Once a foreign concession in the 19th century, it is now a peaceful oasis perfect for a stroll. Admire the historic French Catholic Church and the British Protestant church, and enjoy the romantic atmosphere along tree-lined avenues. It's a prime spot for photography and witnessing a unique chapter in Guangzhou's history.
Our tour will end at Shamian Island.
