What you can expect

Embark on a 2-day adventure to the Volta Region of Ghana. Hike to the top of Mount Afadja, the highest mountain in Ghana, and explore the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary. Visit the sacred grove of Tafi Atome, home of the Mona Monkeys, and walk through the forest to the Wli Waterfall. On day 2, hike to the top of Mount Gemi and enjoy a canopy walk over the Ote Falls.

DAY 1
Let’s go on a sacred journey to the sacred grove of Tafi Atome, home of the Mona Monkeys. Experience the over 200 years of co-existence between the Mona Monkeys and the wonderful inhabitants of Tafi Atome. The playful monkeys are wild but often come down very close to visitors. For the past 200 years, the Mona monkeys inhabiting the tropical forest surrounding the small village of Tafi-Atome have been protected because it was believed they were messengers to the gods. In 1996, the village began broader efforts to protect their forest and monkeys, as well as to offer tours for visitors. As a result of these efforts, the monkey population has increased to about 200 and the forest, with its many species of birds and butterflies, has been preserved.

Fuel your instincts and bury your fears as you experience a new landscape by exploring the routes of Mount Afadja, the highest mountain in Ghana. The top reaches 885 metres and forms part of the Agumatsa range near the villages of Liati Wote and Gbledi in the Volta Region of Ghana, which runs along the Ghana-Togo border.

After hiking Afadjato, continue to the village of Wli as you walk through the forest of Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary on a footpath crossing 9 streams to the waterfalls. The forest inhabits a large colony of fruit bats, butterflies, birds, monkeys and baboons. This is the highest waterfall not just in Ghana but in the entire West African Region. Take a 45 minutes’ walk to the base of the waterfall. Dip yourself in the cooling waters of Wli to cool down.

DAY 2
Nestled at an elevation of 677 metres above sea level is the town of Amedzofe, the highest place of habitation in Ghana. Put on your hiking shoes; stir up your adventure spirit as you take an early morning hike to Mt GEMI, the 5th highest mountain in Ghana. Amedzofe was once a haven for German settlers who inhabited the village for over 40 years. The Germans mounted an antenna on the mountain for communication from Amedzofe to Germany during the 2nd World war.

Continue your journey to enjoy a canopy walk over the Ote falls. The canopy walk gives you a spectacular view of the the waterfall.
