What you can expect

Relive the splendour of the ancient kingdom of Macedonia as you uncover the archaeological remains of its 2 magnificent capitals, Pella and Vergina. Amidst ruins and artefacts that tell stories of the past, get glimpses of daily life and piece together the legacy of a prolific civilisation.

Depart bright and early from Thessaloniki and start your journey into yesteryear at the village of Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great and the second capital of Macedonia. Explore the incredible excavations of the archaeological site, including a royal palace, a grid-plan city centre, and grand houses with beautiful mosaic floors. Admire the stunning details of the Stag Hunt mosaic, as well as the depiction of Dionysus riding a panther.

After time to pursue the wealth of Pella artefacts in the neighbouring museum, you spend the rest of the day in Vergina, the site of the first capital of Macedonia. Here, among the ruins of the ancient city known as Aigai, visit the burial site of Philip II, the father of Alexander the Great, and peruse the treasures found at lavish royal tombs. Ascend the plateau above the city to marvel at the splendour of the palace before returning to Thessaloniki.
