Begin your exploration at the Avenue of the Dead, the main roadway of the city, lined with impressive structures that once housed priests, nobles, and rulers. As you walk along this grand avenue, you’ll arrive at the Pyramid of the Sun, the largest pyramid in Teotihuacán and one of the tallest in Mesoamerica. Standing at over 65 metres (213 feet) high, this massive structure was a sacred place for rituals and astronomical observations. Take in the breathtaking view and imagine what life was like in this once-thriving city.
Continue to the Pyramid of the Moon, which dominates the northern end of the Avenue of the Dead. This impressive pyramid is believed to have been used for ceremonial purposes, including sacrifices and religious festivals. From here, you’ll also enjoy an amazing panoramic view of Teotihuacán.
Next, visit the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, one of the most ornately decorated structures in the city. Admire its intricate carvings of feathered serpents and Tlaloc, the rain god, which symbolise the deep religious beliefs of the Teotihuacán people.
After exploring the archaeological site, you’ll have free time to visit a local artisan workshop, where you’ll learn about Teotihuacán’s ancient obsidian craftsmanship. You’ll also have the opportunity to taste pulque, tequila, and mezcal, while discovering their cultural significance.
Before heading back to Puebla, enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant (optional, not included), where you can savour authentic Mexican cuisine while reflecting on the wonders of Teotihuacán.
