About the Tongariro Alpine Crossing

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand’s most famous day hike. Located in Tongariro National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Area), the 20.2km trail crosses spectacular volcanic terrain including Emerald Lakes, Red Crater, lava flows and alpine valleys.
Distance: 20.2 km (12 miles) one way
Time required: 6–8 hours
Elevation gain: approx. 1,196 metres
This is a challenging alpine hike. Weather conditions can change quickly.

All walkers must complete a free booking/notification with the Department of Conservation before hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Please register online before arrival.
