Discover the Wild Heart of New Zealand
Tucked away in the awe-inspiring landscapes of Franz Josef Glacier on the South Island, the West Coast Wildlife Centre offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to connect with some of the most extraordinary wildlife on Earth—and to be part of a powerful conservation storey.
Step inside this all-weather, award-winning attraction and meet live kiwi in a specially designed, open nocturnal environment (no glass barriers) that mirrors their natural habitat. This is home to the hatching and incubation programme for the rare rowi and Haast tokoeka—the two most endangered kiwi species in the world. Every visit supports vital conservation work that helps bring these incredible creatures back from the brink of extinction.
But the journey doesn’t stop there. Encounter the tuatara, New Zealand’s living dinosaur, whose prehistoric lineage dates back over 200 million years. Watch them bask, feed, and move with quiet wisdom in a modern habitat that tells their unique survival storey.
New in 2025 — The Ambassador West Coast Penguin Encounter ✨
Opening on 18th October 2025, a landmark moment in wildlife conservation arrives with the unveiling of the Ambassador West Coast Penguin Encounter. For the first time, visitors to Franz Josef can meet a colony of rescued kororā (little blue penguins)—New Zealand’s beloved taonga—that cannot return to the wild but will live safely in a purpose-built, world-class habitat.
This inspiring new experience offers close-up encounters, daily keeper talks, and moving stories of resilience, while deepening awareness of the challenges these seabirds face in the wild. More than just an attraction, the Penguin Encounter is a celebration of care, guardianship, and hope for the future of Aotearoa’s marine life.
Be inspired by powerful storytelling, hands-on displays, and engaging exhibits that reveal the deep connection between wildlife, culture, and the dramatic landscapes around you—including the nearby Franz Josef Glacier, a breathtaking reminder of the forces that shape our planet.
Perfect for all ages and open every day, the West Coast Wildlife Centre is more than an attraction—it’s a place of discovery, learning, and hope. Whether you’re a nature lover, a family seeking adventure, or a traveller in search of something meaningful, this is where your journey takes on a deeper purpose.
