Discover the charm of the French Basque Country on an unforgettable day trip from Bilbao, also departing from San Sebastian, perfect for those who want to explore some of the most beautiful and authentic villages on the other side of the border.
After departing from Bilbao and picking up the rest of the group in San Sebastián, we will travel through a landscape of green hills and traditional farmhouses until we cross into France and reach Sare, which is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France. Upon arrival, we will stroll through its historic centre and visit the Church of Saint-Martin de Sare, one of the town's main landmarks. Surrounded by nature and imbued with a distinctly Basque character, Sare provides the perfect first introduction to the region.
The tour continues to Ainhoa, a small, picturesque village with a linear layout that stands out for the beauty of its high street, lined with white houses featuring colourful shutters. Here, we can admire the architectural ensemble and visit the Church of Ainhoa, as well as the traditional washhouse and the area around the town hall, which reflect the history and everyday life of the area.
Your final stop will be Espelette, internationally renowned for its iconic red pepper, the “piment d'Espelette,” which adorns the façades of the town's houses. This lively town combines tradition, cuisine, and a unique atmosphere. Here, you will have plenty of time to enjoy lunch at your leisure, sample local products, and stroll through its colourful streets. Be sure to visit the Church of Saint-Étienne or stop by the Espelette Pepper Interpretation Centre to learn more about this iconic product.
After a day filled with scenery, culture, and flavours, we will head back to San Sebastian and Bilbao, bringing to a close a well-rounded experience that combines the best of the French Basque Country: charming villages, living traditions, and unique cuisine.
