Description

Enjoy a day in the coastal city of Essaouira, which sits on Morocco's rugged Atlantic coast. An expert guide leads your small group through the charming port city, showing you its iconic orange walls, historic ramparts, and markets full of authentic handicrafts and handmade Berber products.

Depart from Marrakech in the morning, heading west towards the coastal city of Essaouira. After a scenic drive, your destination comes into view on the horizon, marked by its ochre-coloured walls that protect the city from the intense winds that blow in from the Atlantic. Upon arrival in the city, step out at Moulay El Hassan, a splendid square surrounded by gorgeous architecture and markets. Snap a few photos, then head to the iconic Scala ramparts that surround the city, getting an up-close look at their 18th-century construction.

Your guide takes you next to marketplaces and shops around the UNESCO-listed medina, where you can discover a massive variety of beautiful, handmade crafts and jewellery. Ask for suggestions on where to take lunch—being a coastal city, Essaouira is abundant in restaurants serving up delicious and fresh seafood. In the afternoon, visit an association of indigenous Berber women who produce argan oil products and learn about the significance of the oil in Berber communities. Your day comes to a close as you drive back to Marrakech with the sun setting behind you.

Three hour ride to a beautiful seaside town. Mandatory stop at a Argan cooperative on the way. Guide was informative on history of town.

The driver stopped at designated places to get the passengers to spend money on things they did not want. When we arrived at Essaouira the guide we had used up a lot of our time there by taking us to places we weren’t interested in, again to get us to hand over money on things we weren’t interested in. We would have liked to have had more free time to explore instead of the 3/4 of an hour at the end of the visit. Trouble with Morocco is that the price they give you is not the real price. They give a price and when they have been paid they ask for a gift of about another £20.

This was not a guided tour. This was an overpriced bus ride from Marrakech to Essaouira. The town was well worth a visit.
