What you can expect

  • The Seasider is one of New Zealand’s most scenic coastal train journeys, travelling between Dunedin and the charming seaside towns north of the city. This relaxed half-day rail experience reveals breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, rugged coastal cliffs and sweeping beaches — all best seen from the rails.

Departing from the iconic Dunedin Railway Station, the journey follows Otago’s dramatic coastline. Whether you’re visiting from a cruise ship, exploring Otago, or looking for a memorable local experience, The Seasider offers a unique and comfortable way to see Dunedin from a new perspective.

    Choose Your Journey:
    Option 1: Arc Brewery Stop-Off
A perfect mix of scenery and social time. Travel north along the coast, then hop off at Arc Brewery, a popular local spot. Enjoy craft beer and food from visiting local food trucks before re-joining the return train. This option is ideal for anyone after an easy afternoon escape.

Option 2: Full Scenic Journey to Merton
Stay onboard for the complete coastal experience to Merton. This extended route showcases the region’s contrasts — from city edge to open coast, farmland to forest — with panoramic ocean views throughout. Relax in classic carriages while our friendly onboard crew share stories of the line and the coastal communities it connects.

    What to Expect:
Spectacular coastal views as the train hugs the shoreline, passing cliffs, beaches and farmland

Highlights including Deborah Bay, Blueskin Bay and Pūrākaunui Beach

Travel through the Mihiwaka Tunnel, one of the longest railway tunnels in New Zealand

Comfortable carriages dating from the 1930s

Informative onboard storytelling about Dunedin’s coastal history and settlements

A choice of a full return or a relaxed stop-off at Arc Brewery
