What you can expect

Step back in time and enter Huis Van Gijn. Here, time has stood still for over a century. The museum is the house of the banker but foremost collector Simon van Gijn who lived there from 1864 until his death in 1922.

Wandering through the rooms and hallways gives an accurate impression of how Dutch high society lived around the 1900s. It also provides a peek into the lives of the resident staff and their day to day work for the family.

Van Gijn left the house and most of his collections to the Old Dordrecht Society. His wish was for the collections to be made publicly accessible and for his home to be converted into a museum, maintaining the interior in its original state as much as possible.

He was a great lover of history and art. The house (built in 1729) contains several elements from different periods of the 17th, 18th and 19th century. Admire the painted ceilings, unique wall tapestries and original decorative flooring.

Explore the museum with a guidebook available in English, German, and French.
