Your journey continues to Quilotoa, one of South America’s most breathtaking volcanic crater lakes, located within the Illinizas Ecological Reserve. Once at the viewpoint, you’ll begin a 30-minute descent to the edge of the stunning emerald-colored lagoon, formed inside a collapsed volcano. At the bottom, you’ll have the option to go kayaking on the crater lake (approx. $3), a peaceful and scenic experience in this unique natural setting. For the return hike — which is steep and can be physically demanding — you may choose to go back up by mule for approximately $10, a more relaxed and traditional way to reach the top.
