Overview

Bagamoyo Historical Stone Town is located on east coast of Tanzania, 75 kilometres northern side of Dar es Salaam. Bagamoyo is one of the most important trading centers on the East African Coast and a famous embarkation port for slaves from the hinterland. When the German colonialists came to East Africa they made Bagamoyo their first German East Africa capital between 1886 and 1891. It is a place of considerable significance to world history, both as an entry point for Arab and European missionaries, explorers, and traders in East and Central Africa, and in the history of the infamous slave trade.

Drive from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo Historical Town. This will take about 90 minutes from Dar es Salaam. On arrival you will start with visiting Kaole ruins. Kaole is a small town and archaeological site in Tanzania, located 6 km east of Bagamoyo on the Indian Ocean coast. The area contains old stone ruins dating to a period between the 13th century and the 16th century. The ruins date back to the 13th century and consist of two mosques and 30 tombs. The tombs at Kaole were built from coral stones with stone pillars that marked some of the tombs. A small museum has been established, where some artefacts are exposed that were found in the ruins. Some of these artefacts are Chinese and thus provide evidence of ancient commercial relationships.
