What you can expect

We begin at the historic Universidade de Coimbra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has shaped the identity of the city for over seven centuries. Standing in the Paço das Escolas courtyard, you’ll hear how Coimbra became Portugal’s academic capital and why student traditions are still such an important part of local life today.

Inside the extraordinary Biblioteca Joanina, you’ll see one of the most impressive baroque interiors in Europe. Beyond its beauty, you’ll learn what makes this library unique — from its construction to the unusual details that protect its centuries-old collection.

From the university hilltop, we walk down through the medieval Arco de Almedina, once part of the city’s defensive walls. As we descend, the atmosphere shifts: narrow lanes, hidden stairways, traditional shops, and traces of Moorish and medieval Coimbra still visible in the stones.

In the lower town, we step inside the historic Igreja de Santa Cruz, where Portugal’s first king is buried and where major moments of the country’s early history unfolded. Just outside, Praça 8 de Maio shows a different side of the city — lively, local, and shaped by centuries of university presence.

This route is designed to connect the university and the historic centre in one continuous experience, so you don’t just visit monuments — you understand how everything fits togethe
