Located about 30 km from Bikaner, the Karni Mata Temple is one of Rajasthan’s most unusual and fascinating shrines. Dedicated to Karni Mata, a revered 14th-century mystic and incarnation of Goddess Durga, the temple is world-famous for its thousands of black rats, locally known as kabbas, which are considered sacred and protected by devotees. Worshippers believe these rats are reincarnations of Karni Mata’s followers and bring good fortune when spotted, especially the rare white rats, which are regarded as highly auspicious. The temple’s intricate marble façade, silver doors, and unique rituals make it a spiritual and cultural highlight, drawing both pilgrims and curious travellers from across the world.

Situated around 8 km from Bikaner, the National Research Centre on Camel is a one-of-its-kind institute dedicated to the conservation and study of camels, often called the “Ship of the Desert.” Established in 1984, it is home to different camel breeds and serves as a hub for research, breeding, and healthcare of these vital animals. Visitors can tour the camel stables, learn about their role in Rajasthan’s desert life, and even enjoy unique products such as camel milk and ice cream. The centre also features a small museum that offers fascinating insights into the cultural and economic importance of camels in the region, making it an unmissable stop for travellers.
