Activity itinerary

Umi Jigoku

  • 45m
  • Admission ticket included
Umi Jigoku is one of Beppu’s most iconic “Hells,” famous for its vivid cobalt-blue hot spring pond and dramatic clouds of steam rising from the surface. The striking colour comes from minerals in the naturally heated water, creating a scene that feels both beautiful and otherworldly. Beyond the main pond, the site offers scenic viewpoints and small shrines, making it the perfect place to experience the power of Beppu’s geothermal landscape up close.

Oniishibozu Jigoku

  • 35m
  • Admission ticket included
Oniishibozu Jigoku is known for its bubbling grey mud pools that rise and burst like living sculptures. Unlike the blue waters of Umi Jigoku, this “Hell” showcases the earthy side of geothermal activity, where heat and minerals create thick, churning mud. The slow, rhythmic movement and the sound of boiling bubbles make it a fascinating stop, offering a different and unforgettable view of Beppu’s volcanic energy.

Shiraike Jigoku

  • 35m
  • Admission ticket included
Shiraike Jigoku offers a calmer and more refined atmosphere, featuring a pale blue hot spring pond set within a beautifully arranged garden. The water’s colour and gentle steam create a serene contrast to the more dramatic geothermal sites nearby. This stop highlights the quieter side of Beppu’s “Hells,” where visitors can enjoy the elegance of the landscape while still feeling the presence of natural underground heat.
