What you can expect

Begin your adventure with a pickup from your hotel in Belize City. Travel through the lush pine forests and jungles of Belize to reach Caracol, one of the most impressive Maya sites in the country.

Located deep in the heart of the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is situated at the base of the Maya Mountains in the Cayo District. Covering an area of nearly 25,000 acres, Caracol is one of the largest Maya sites, featuring an immense agricultural field system and elaborate city planning.

Explore the site with your guide and learn about its history. Discover how Caracol was a major player in the geopolitics of the Mayan civilisation, engaging in several wars with neighbouring polities, such as Tikal, Naranjo, and Ucanal in Guatemala.

At the peak of its political power, it was estimated that almost 100,000 people populated Caracol, covering an area of approximately 38 square miles. See the main temple, Caana, which means “Sky Place.” At 143 feet high, it is the tallest structure built in Belize.

Climb to the top of Caana for incredible views of the surrounding jungle, mountains, and a snippet of the Belize-Guatemala border. Learn how the temples at Caracol are an architectural marvel built by the Maya using limestone blocks transported from nearby quarries.

Many believe that the Maya used Caana as a ceremonial centre for religious events and royal gatherings. The ancient Maya created not only a spectacular complex but also incorporated excellent acoustics. The voices of priests and rulers were clearly amplified to the masses assembled in the plaza below.

After exploring Caracol, enjoy a packed lunch before heading to the Rio Hon Pools. Take a refreshing dip in the natural pools and relax in the serene surroundings before returning to Belize City.
