What you can expect

  • Begin your cultural journey in Mizunami, Gifu, where you’ll explore the origins of Japan’s local Kabuki culture. Your experience starts at Museum Nakasendo, where you’ll learn how Mino Kabuki — a community-based form of traditional Kabuki — has been passed down through generations.

Discover the colourful world of Edo-period performing arts, costumes, and local actors who brought joy to their towns. Then, step into the world of performance at the nearby Aioiza Theatre, a beautifully preserved wooden playhouse with over 100 years of history.

Transform yourself with Kabuki makeup (Kumadori style), wear a traditional wig and costume, and rehearse a short scene under the guidance of a local Kabuki master. Perform on the real stage used for actual performances — an unforgettable moment under the lights.

Afterwards, enjoy a photo session on stage and create your own Oshikuma (Kabuki face imprint) — a unique keepsake made from your painted Kabuki makeup.
