Built in the 1st century AD, the Ancient Theatre of Orange is the best preserved in Europe. A true legacy of the Roman Empire, it owes its fame to its monumental stage wall and exceptional acoustics. The audio guide is free and available in 10 languages. Visitor trails that bring the past into the future enrich the visit, or rather make the experience more intense: “From Roman Genius to Modern Genius” shows how Roman genius has influenced our modern civilisation, “Legends of the Theatre” allows visitors to explore the history and, above all, the magic of the performances, “The Secrets of the Theatre, an Unexpected Journey” takes you back in time with a virtual reality headset, 2,000 years into the past to the heart of the theater's golden age. This virtual reality experience is offered as a supplement to the entry ticket. During the summer, iconic theatre characters, the Guardians of History, are scattered throughout the site to recount adventures and anecdotes from their respective eras. Educational workshops also allow young and old alike to make an object symbolic of everyday Roman life. Each visitor leaves with their creation. Another exceptional example of Roman art is the Triumphal Arch, around which are 12 audio stations broadcasting stories told by Roman characters. The Triumphal Arch of Orange is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Museum of Art and History exhibits priceless treasures. Exceptional archaeological remains are preserved there. The extraordinary history of Orange is retraced through the centuries. To complete this cultural discovery during the day, under the stars, there is an immersive show in the setting of the Theatre: the Sound Odyssey, When the Gods Intervene. A 45-minute experience with AI-generated video mapping and a sound experience via binaural headphones. This spectacular immersive journey is available from May to December (not included in the admission ticket). The Ancient Theatre of Orange offers a unique visitor experience! The monuments are open all year round. Some opening hours may be modified during rehearsals and performances. Last admission with audio guide 30 minutes before closing time.
