Temple of Heaven

  • 20m
  • Admission ticket included
As a vital historical and cultural heritage site of Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is more than just its grand architectures—it holds countless stories behind every corner. Our 2-hour "Temple of Heaven Essence Tour" lets our professional guide uncover these hidden tales, and we offer 3 tailored packages to suit your needs: Package 1: Basic 2-Hour Tour – Meet your guide at the Temple of Heaven’s East Gate and dive straight into the tour. Package 2: Hotel Transfer & Comfort Tour – Enjoy return private car service: your guide and driver pick you up from your hotel, ensuring a seamless experience perfect for short layovers or time-sensitive schedules. Package 3: Temple Tour + Peking Duck Experience – Combine the 2-hour temple visit with a meal at a renowned local Peking Duck restaurant near the Temple of Heaven.

Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket included
Start by meeting your guide at the agreed spot (East Gate for Package 1; your hotel lobby for Package 2&3). Enter through the East Gate—if you visit in the morning, you’ll be greeted by the lively daily life of Beijing’s retirees: some singing folk songs, others practising tai chi. Feel free to join in briefly to soak up the local vibe before starting the tour. First stop: the iconic Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests—the triple-eaved building that stands as the heart of the Temple of Heaven. The 38-meter-tall wooden frame, built entirely without a single nail, held together by interlocking brackets that showcase ancient Chinese craftsmanship at its finest. Your guide will draw your attention to the 28 giant wooden pillars, explaining how each set serves a symbolic purpose. After exploring the main hall, your guide will take you to the two small museums flanking the courtyard, and a small hall behind the Hall of Prayer, which was once the storage space for imperial ancestral tablets.

Danbi Bridge

  • 10m
  • Admission ticket included
Next, walk along the Danbi Bridge—a 360-meter-long raised walkway once reserved exclusively for emperors (commoners and officials were forbidden to step on it). At the end of the bridge lies the Imperial Vault of Heaven, a smaller circular building that once stored the ceremonial tablets of heaven and imperial ancestors. Your guide will explain its role in supporting the Hall of Prayer’s rituals and point out its delicate carvings.

Echo Wall

  • 20m
  • Admission ticket included
Next, you’ll arrive at the Imperial Vault of Heaven. This building was once used to store the ceremonial tablets of “Heaven” and imperial ancestors, which were moved here from the Hall of Prayer when not in use. Check out the intricate carvings of dragons and clouds on its doors, symbols of imperial authority and divine blessing. But the real highlight of this area is the Echo Wall that surrounds the courtyard, and your guide will waste no time inviting you to experience its magic. You’ll be surprised at how clearly your companion can hear it, even from across the courtyard.

Yuanqiutan

  • 30m
  • Admission ticket included
The final stop is the Circular Mound Altar, the most sacred spot in the entire complex, where emperors held grand winter solstice rituals to worship “the god of heaven” the supreme god in imperial religion. As you approach the three-tiered circular altar, your guide will explain its symbolic design. At the centre of the top tier, your guide will point out the Heaven’s Heart Stone—a single, smooth round stone. You will stand on it and “communicate directly with the god of heaven.” They might even encourage you to say a quiet wish, keeping the tradition of imperial prayer alive in a gentle, personal way.

Temple of Heaven (Pass by)

Once the temple portion of your tour wraps up. For the basic package, your guide will summarise the key stories and details you’ve learned, then bid you farewell—leaving you free to explore the remaining grounds, like the scenic Long Corridor, on your own or exit via the South Gate. If you opted for the hotel transfer package, your private driver will be waiting nearby, and your guide will walk you to the car, confirming your route back to your hotel to ensure a smooth, worry-free journey. For the Peking Duck package, you’ll follow your guide to the nearby restaurant, and along the way, they’ll share the history of this iconic dish—how it started as a royal delicacy in imperial times before becoming a beloved staple of Chinese cuisine. Once at the restaurant, they’ll even teach you the proper way to eat it: wrapping tender slices of duck meat, crisp scallions, and sweet bean sauce in a thin pancake, so you can savour the flavours just as emperors once did.
