Discover the history of Okayama and Kurashiki on a guided day trip from Okayama. Visit the Okayama Castle, stroll through the Korakuen Garden, and explore the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter.
Meet your guide at Okayama Station and head to your first destination, Okayama Castle. Learn about the history of the castle and its importance during the Sengoku Period. Explore the castle grounds and observe the main tower’s unique black exterior which helped it earn its nickname of “Crow Castle.”
Head to Korakuen Garden, one of Japan’s top three beautiful gardens. Stroll through the garden and see the multiple tea houses, temples, and ponds. Learn about the garden's history and design principles from your guide.
After visiting the garden, head back to Okayama station where you will break for lunch. Try out local specialities such as oyster okonomiyaki, barazushi, and hiruzen yakisoba, as well as some fruit-based desserts.
From Okayama station, head out by train to the city of Kurashiki, where you will be able to visit the Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter. This beautifully preserved historical district with its old-fashioned buildings will allow you to picture what life would have been like in the past.
The canal running down the middle of the old townscape further adds to the charm and beauty of the area. Your guide will take you to some of the most relevant locations within the historical quarter, such as Achi Shrine, Kurashiki Ivy Square, and former family residences.
You will also have time to walk around the townscape on your own and step into any museums, shops, or cafes which pique your interest. If you wish to further immerse yourself in the historical atmosphere of Kurashiki, rent a Kimono at many of the available shops throughout the townscape area.
If dressing up is not your thing, there are still many interesting locations to explore on your own, such as the Ohara Museum of Art and Denim Street. Make your way back to Kurashiki Station on foot and board a train to Okayama Station, where the tour will come to an end in front of the Shinkansen gates.
