Overview

Golden monkeys tracking is a thrilling experience that gives an impressive happenstance with these beautiful species of monkeys known as the Golden monkeys, endangered species.

The endangered golden monkey enjoys a territory of highland forests, especially bamboo, living in groups of up to 80 individuals. A handful of troops in Volcanoes National Park have been habituated and can be tracked in a similar way to the gorillas.

The monkeys are playful and inquisitive and often spend their time leaping from bamboo branches or frolicking on the forest floor towards the base of the volcanoes and have overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists.

At Gorilla Guardians Village, a cultural centre staffed almost entirely by former poachers becomes gorilla guardians. Visitors get to experience Rwandan village life by grinding seeds, firing bows and arrows, taking part in a traditional Intore dance and even partaking in the wedding ceremony.

Our driver guide will pick you from your hotel in Kigali at 04h00 am, short briefing about your tour and then drive to Volcanoes National Park in northwest Rwanda (the drive lasts 2 hours). On arrival, proceed to the park's headquarters for registration and briefing. Your drive guide will assist and facilitate in all process at park's headquarters. Your driver guide will then transfer to the start point of your guided walk that begins around 08h300 am. The tracking usually takes between 45 minutes to 4 hours, once you come to the habituated families, you will spend the allowed one hour with the golden monkeys as they go about their daily life. There are two habituated groups of golden monkeys, one group comprises around 80 to 100 members and has its home at the foot of Mount Sabyinyo. Golden monkey characterised by its bright golden body, cheeks and tail, these playful primates are a pleasure to watch.
