What you can expect

5-Day Journey Through Mesopotamia: From Sacred Shrines to the Birthplace of Civilisation

This immersive five-day cultural expedition from Baghdad is designed for travellers who seek depth, authenticity, and intellectual enrichment. It traces the spiritual heart of Shi’a Islam and the scientific foundations of human civilisation across southern Iraq—ancient Mesopotamia, the cradle of writing, law, astronomy, and urban life.

Day 1: Karbala – Babylon – Najaf

Your journey begins in Karbala, home to the shrines of Imam Hussein and Al-Abbas ibn Ali, among the most revered sites in the Islamic world. These shrines commemorate the Battle of Karbala (680 CE), a defining moment in Islamic ethics and resistance to tyranny.

You then travel back over 4,000 years to Babylon, once the capital of Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar II. Here you explore the ruins of temples, palaces, and processional streets that shaped early law, mathematics, and astronomy. Nearby lies Borsippa, home to the Ziggurat of Nabu, god of wisdom and writing. The day concludes with a visit to the shrine of Prophet Dhul-Kifl, before an overnight stay in Najaf at Zamzam Hotel.

Day 2: Najaf – City of Knowledge and Eternity

In Najaf, you visit the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, a cornerstone of Islamic theology, jurisprudence, and philosophy. You then explore Wadi Al-Salam Cemetery, the largest cemetery on Earth, reflecting centuries of spiritual continuity.

The day continues to Bahr Al-Najaf, followed by historic mosques of early Islam: Kufa Mosque, Dar Imam Ali Mosque, and Al-Sahla Mosque. Overnight in Najaf.

Day 3: Uruk to Basra

Travel south to Uruk, one of the world’s first cities and the birthplace of writing (cuneiform), monumental architecture, and epic literature such as Gilgamesh. Uruk represents the scientific dawn of humanity.

Continue to Basra, stroll along the Corniche, and enjoy a serene cruise on the Shatt Al-Arab, where history, trade, and poetry converge. Overnight at Ward Hotel.

Day 4: Basra’s Cultural Mosaic

Explore the Al-Hassoun Museum, showcasing Basra’s intellectual legacy as a centre of linguistics, navigation, and Islamic scholarship. Visit historic Armenian churches, a testament to Basra’s multicultural identity, then enjoy traditional markets rich with spices, dates, and river-born culture.

Day 5: Marshes, Origins, and Return

Visit Adam’s Tree, near the meeting point of the Tigris and Euphrates—symbolically linked to ancient creation narratives. Continue to the Al-Chibayish Marshes, a UNESCO-recognized ecosystem inhabited continuously for millennia. Enjoy a traditional riverside masgouf lunch before concluding at the majestic Ziggurat of Ur, one of the best-preserved monuments of ancient Mesopotamia. Return to Baghdad with a deeper understanding of humanity’s spiritual and scientific roots.
