Visit Uppsala – a university town and much more

Uppsala has the oldest university in Scandinavia, and it is full of historical sights, beautiful walks and an exciting nightlife.

The Swedish town of Uppsala is famous for its university, which is located on the western banks of Fyrisan. The river divides the town in half with the western side dedicated to university life and the eastern side a normal Swedish town with interesting shops and bars with not only a student clientele.

Start your trip to Uppsala with a walk along the river. When the sun is out you can see many locals sunbathing on the jetties or in the park Stadstradgarden by the river. On your stroll along Fyrisan you get a fantastic view of the Uppsala Skyline which is dominated by the main attractions Uppsala Castle, the university library Carolina Rediviva and Uppsala Cathedral.

Make sure to visit University House and the library Carolina Rediviva on the university campus. These are particularly special places during the celebrations of Walpurgis on the 30 April, as the students celebrate with music recitals, rafting on the river and different ceremonies by the library. Uppsala Castle was built by the king Gustav Vasa in the 16th century, and is well worth a visit. In the old building you find Uppsala Art Museum and the museum House of Peace where you can learn more about famous Swedes like Dag Hammarskjold and Raoul Wallenberg. Admire the gothic architecture of Uppsala Cathedral, marvel at the largest church window in the country and pay your respects at the grave of world famous botanist Carl Linneaus.

Uppsala is located 18 minutes by train from Stockholm Arlanda Airport. You can get almost anywhere in the compact town by foot or by bike, and if you want to travel further afield the region has an excellent public transport network. Use local buses to visit for instance nearby Hagahogen, a fascinating Bronze Age burial site and a lovely and unique spot for a picnic.

Visit Uppsala – a beautiful and accessible old town with a long history and enjoy good shopping and traditional Scandinavian food or party with the students of Uppsala.
